Once the starvation ended after the first month or so, we got to enjoy camp life; it seemed like nothing was going to change—no attack from the Rebs, and no way for us to get up and over the mountains. Might as well begin to have some fun, we thought.

So Chaplain Strong and some of the boys started having regular cotillion parties in camp. On the parade ground, Negro servants played their fiddles and gentlemen went through honors-to-partners and circle-all with as much pleasure as if their partners had on pink dresses and white slippers.

But after a cotillion, the chaplain always sang the same hymn, our taps for the night and a reminder of the war:
